Beaches
Both to the north and to the south of San Juan del Sur you can find pristine beaches that are enclosed by tree-covered hills that give each beach a unique and private setting. The beaches that can be found around San Juan del Sur also offer many possibilities. Some have hotels or restaurants, while others are virtually empty. Surfing
The beaches around San Juan del Sur are well known for their great waves. There is more than 60 km of beach around San Juan del Sur, most of it not yet discovered by the masses. The wind is praised for blowing almost the whole year around. Known beaches are Playa Maderas, Playa Hermosa, Los Perros, and Popoyo. Most of the beaches are accessible from San Juan del Sur. A beach bus transports surfers to many of the local beaches, as do many of the local surf shops, where you can also rent boards. Talk to your rental agent for more information.
Boating
A sunset sail, a day-long fishing trip, or an outing on one of the local pangas are all great ways to experience the Pacific Ocean and view the Bay of San Juan. Away from the town's bay you will find pristine beaches surrounded by tree covered hills that make this coast often inaccessible by road. With luck, you might encounter some of the spectacular animals this coast has to offer including whales, dolphins, sea turtles, frigate birds, pelicans, and other seabirds. Fishing
Fishing in San Juan del Sur is an exciting and memorable experience. Fish including marlin, sailfish, dorado, wahoo, and yellowfin tuna can be caught offshore. The inshore waters offer rooster fish, sierra mackerel, jack crevalle, bonitos, barracudas, snapper and grouper. Fishing in San Juan is at its peak during the rainy season, May- November, but low winds in March can provide prime sushi opportunities, as well.
Canopy Tours
The longest canopy tour in Nicaragua is located only five minutes from the center of San Juan del Sur, offering 2.5 kilometers of zipline in a rural setting where nature prevails. Nature is abundant in the area, and you can see animals including monkeys, raccoons, birds, and other animals. The vegetation also creates a great setting. The canopy tour starts at the top of one of the hills, from where you have a superb view of the bay of San Juan del Sur and its surroundings. Call us for more information.
Horseback Riding
Explore the countryside on horseback. Take a one-hour ride on the beach or extend your tour into the hills for stunning views of San Juan del Sur. Ask us for more info.
SCUBA Diving
There are several underwater attractions that make San Juan del Sur an interesting diving spot. A handful of rocky islets are located along the coast. These islets, situated about 3 kilometers offshore, create a great habitat for many fish and other animals, which make them an interesting place for divers. Wildlife
There are numerous ways to experience the amazing wildlife that Nicaragua has to offer. Wildlife Reserve La Flor, located 18 km south of San Juan, is best known for its protection of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles who come to the beach en masse, during so called arribadas to lay their eggs.
